Welcome to Jazz Zone

Trumpeters on course

Booking for Jazz Zone 2024, 22nd-26th July, is NOW OPEN! More info here.

Since its inception in 2003, Jazz Zone has established itself as one of London’s most exciting music courses for aspiring young musicians.

Jazz Zone is a supportive and stimulating learning environment, and is directed by a team which includes some of the UK’s most experienced professional musicians and teachers.

Jazz Zone nurtures and develops both ensemble and improvising skills through rehearsing and performing a range of jazz music, including swing, bop, soul, funk and latin styles. Students gain experience of a variety of ensemble settings: studio band, big band and small jazz combo. Plus, everyone gets a taste of Brazilian percussion in the now legendary ‘Jazz Zone Bateria.’

Above all else, Jazz Zone is fun!

How it works

The daily programme runs from 10am-4pm.

In the morning the emphasis is on ensemble playing. We start the day with everyone playing together in the Studio Band, an ideal opportunity for students of all levels and ages to get to know each other. In the second session of the morning those with more experience play with the Big Band, and for those new to Jazz the ‘Contra Band’ is an ideal introduction.

In the afternoon the students join together in smaller groups where the focus is on improvisation. Whether an experienced improviser or a complete beginner, these groups offer a nurturing environment in which to develop their skills. The afternoon finishes with everyone together again, playing Brazilian percussion in the Jazz Zone Bateria!

Who’s it for?

Jazz Zone is open to the following instrumentalists:

Woodwind: flute, clarinet, saxophone

Brass: trumpet, trombone, french horn

Rhythm: guitar, keyboards, bass, drums – These rhythm section places are very limited and places get taken up quickly.

Students will be expected to be of at least Grade 3 standard. However, Jazz Zone strongly recommends that keyboard players be of at least Grade 6 standard.
